One of the most important parts of my professional experience was the practicum experience of EDUPPPEYP2 as an early childhood educator. It gave me a chance to put into practice the theory that I have studied at my university classes in the classroom setting and allowed me to gain a more insight into early childhood teaching and learning.
My primary focus during the start of the practicum was on classroom routines, behaviour of children and the methods of instruction applied by my mentor teacher. These observations began to help me realize how classroom organization, explicit expectations, and interesting tasks are present and how they play the role of establishing a positive learning environment. I also observed that the young children are the best learners when they are actively engaged in the learning process and not by merely receiving information.
My practicum also led to me planning and giving my own lessons. An example was my lesson on the letter O, in which I created various activities that would help children to build their phonics. Phonics songs, storytelling on an octopus toy, and I Spy activity were the parts of the lesson, during which children found objects that start with the letter O. The activities promoted involvement and gave the children the chance to relate the new sound with things they see in their daily observations.
The experience supported my knowledge of play-based learning that is commonly known as an effective teaching method in early childhood education. The use of play-based activities enables children to play, interact and build knowledge in significant ways. The theory of Lev Vygotsky, who paid great attention to the role of social interaction in the learning process, and Jean Piaget, who stressed that children acquire an understanding by actively exploring it, is also reflected in these practices.
My classroom management and communication skills were also enhanced during my practicum. This is because teaching young learners is flexible, patient, and adaptive to changes depending on the responses of the children. I also got to know that some children should be provided with more directive guidance, and others are in need of more demanding activities. Consequently, I used differentiation plans in order to accommodate every learner. As an illustration, there were children who were required to trace O-letter by a hand with instructions, and those children were asked to recognize O-words on their own or construct simple sentences.
One more significant element of my professional development was the learning on how to become a Community Collaborator. My practicum experience taught me that good teaching requires being cooperative with the colleagues, mentor teachers and the entire school population. Meeting with my mentor teacher on a regular basis also gave me helpful feedback which enabled me to improve my lesson planning and teaching strategies. Other activities that I participated in at school like assemblies also enabled me to see how teamwork helped to create a nurturing learning environment.
Moreover, my practicum also enabled me to acquire the qualities of Future Cultivator. Early childhood educators are important in determining how children have an attitude that influences how they learn as well as learners acquiring necessary skills in life. I got to know that as a teacher, it is not only necessary to provide academic information to students, but also to make them curious, creative, and confident. Since I was making children ask questions, think about things and engage in discussions, I was helping them develop the skills that will be useful in the future.
Another useful aspect of my practicum experience was reflection. Teaching experience helped me to assess my teaching in order to improve my areas of weaknesses. As an illustration, once I taught some activities, I noticed that I could make instructions simpler and provided more visual aid to get children to learn tasks more efficiently. This reflection exercise assisted me in becoming more conscious of my teaching practices and prompted me to keep on improving.
Overall, the EDUPPPEYP2 practicum experience was a transformative stage in my professional development. It has enabled me to close the gap between theory and practice, enhance my teaching capabilities and gain better insight into the learning ability of children. More importantly, the experience has made me become a reflective teacher who believes in collaboration, helping kids grow, and trying to build the skills required by the future generations.
